Art Style

Devlog – Art style, UI
By Faye
My main role within the team is to create the visuals. So, with my team I discussed what styles we want before I began creating anything. We looked at different games with styles we liked so we could draw inspiration from them.
I drew a lot of inspiration from games like snipperclips. Their style is simplistic but effective.
Using photoshop, I created different versions of the same character. I first went for a hand drawn style that was sketchier and more unpolished. This was pulling from the scrapbook feel of snipperclips. We as a team did not like this style and wanted a more polished style.
I chose to do thick black outline on the character. The solid shape made more sense gameplay wise as the player will have to line up with another shape to win. I chose a thicker outline as it helped the character stand out to the player.
I kept the colours ad style quite simple. I took inspiration from the minecraft plastic texture back, the solid colour with a lighter border created more interest instead of a flat colour.
Once we were happy with the first character, I went and created more with different shapes colours for each level.
We chose to have the shape that was missing from the characters to be the same throughout them all to keep it consistent.
When creating the splash screen, I knew I wanted a large and bubbly font for the title. When I found one, I added a black outline to match the character style. I did the same for the play button.
For the platforms though, I decided to not add a black outline so it would not take any attention away from the characters. We wanted to keep the style and colour scheme consistent; I used the same colours for the splash screen and the platforms.
We are still far away from completion, but we are happy with the stylistic choices we have made so far!
